| I have always been a big fan of contesting.
I regularly operate HF and VHF/UHF contests on SSB, CW, and RTTY.
Most of the contests I enter are from home as GØMTN on HF. For VHF/UHF I normally operate from the Wythall Radio Club as G1WAC single operator or normally with a few friends. On HF I have operated with the Lichfield Radio Society for Field Days on CW and SSB, and the odd foray into WPX contest. Several members of the Lichfield crew operated with Fred G4BWP, Lionel G5LP and Ian G0KRL in 1999 as MW7Z and won the Multi-Operator section of the IOTA contest. I have also been to help with the Martlesham DX & Contest Groups multi-multi operation at M6T for CQ WW DX SSB in wet and windy Suffolk during 1999 and 2000. In 2002 I was invited to join the Voo-Dudes for their expedition to Burkina Faso - operating as XT2DX during the CQ WW DX CW contest in the Multi-Multi category, and hope to be back for 2003. July 2003 will be remembered for being part of the GB5HQ IARU contest RSGB HQ team which was an opportunity to do something different in contesting !

| I try to be quite active - my busiest contest
year to date was in 2000 when I sent entries off (or was part of a team
for)
73 separate events. This included 3 complete Field Day
weekends and a week doing CQ WW SSB ! The few years before
and since have normally averaged about 50 contests - so as you can imagine
I am never bored at weekends !
Contesting for me pushes my abilities as an amateur radio operator to the limit. Under no other conditions will you have to think as hard and as quickly about propagation, rates, and multipliers whilst trying to pick out callsigns you might under other circumstances pretend not to hear ! The major HF and VHF contests are an excellent way to get new countries / zones / squares / islands / states / counties etc. - as well as catching up with old friends. When not entering seriously, I'm still keen to
come on and give some points away for an hour or two, and send a log off
to show support for the contest.
